(do you mean patreon?)
Also why is this even an issue?????
you get free art? okay great. suddenly an artist wants you to pay them so they can CONTINUE to make art? that’s totally legit too
i think people like to forget, making money from something you spend all your time doing isn’t taking advantage it’s making a living
thats like telling an unpaid medical intern that once they become a medical professional in their field that they’re now ‘taking advantage’ of patients because now they charge for their services. you can say people who charge money for things they’re good at sellouts all you want but for a lot of people this is their only source of income like why is art things being an actual job so hard for people to believe?
Like okay let’s take Zet for example because his situation is something I can personally relate to
Zet does smut comics from time to time, personal comics that you all get enjoyment out of if you read them. Comics are a lot of work like a lot of work I do comics too I know how time consuming the process is. Zet made a patreon for people to help support him so he could CONTINUE making comics. You know why? Because they’re time consuming and he states that his living and employment situation doesnt allow him to take all that extra time to make those FREE COMICS because he needs to make money too.
Now there’s me. my background is in animation. I loooove bringing things to life. if i could sit around and make porn gifs all day i sure as hell would. But here’s why i dont: animation, frame by frame, no symbols, TAKES TIME lots of time, time i cant afford to throw around all willy nilly while i have to do work that actually gives me money because thats a thing that people need in industrialized societies. money. we need that thing.
so I dont make porn gifs, i do commissions instead. people don’t buy animation commissions because they cost a lot. So if I made a patreon, guess what my content would be.
lots of that stuff
but since I do NOT have a patreon, and i am not afforded the spare time to do these for myself, i just scribble up these when i have the time
there’s this recreational thing we artists like to spend our money on. we like to buy this thing called food it keeps us from dying. ya feel me?
Patreon “has caused a divide among commissioners”? Anon must be talking about a different set of commissioners than the ones I know (entirely possible, the commissioner grapevine is long and windy and has many branches).
Generally the kind of people who pay artists to draw stuff are okay with artists wanting to get paid to draw stuff.
There has been some concern about certain practices by artists on Patreon, for example giving advance warning of commission openings as a perk to patrons. But I’ve not seen an actual division. Am I missing something?
I haven’t really seen Patreon causing problems like that (at least not for me), but um, why is it so bad for artists to have a way to earn some money making things people want to see? It’s not like we’re forcing certain individuals to pay, it’s more like, if you want to support an artist you like you now have another way to do so. If you don’t or can’t, then that’s fine too. I get that not everyone is rolling in extra money. Granted, I’m sure there are a few artists who abuse it, but again, it’s your choice to support them or not.
I will say right now, without the incentive of earning some money for drawing my comic, Oh! Mandy, it would not be nearing the end of it’s second chapter.
The fact of the matter is, I (and artists in general) just can’t prioritize non paid/personal passion work over paid work. It takes a lot of time and energy to create something people enjoy looking at and, if enough people like it and want to pay you for it, I don’t see the problem.
That being said, everyone whose enjoyed my silly little Oh! Mandy comic so far, you should all be giving a HUGE thank you to the patrons who have supported the creation of chapter 2. It doesn’t matter if it was $1 or $20, every cent reassured me that I was creating something that people thought was worth the time and energy I spent making it. So, thanks guys. :)
well lookit what i found, guess this is relevant for the time
